About "Olympus"

Project Olympus is an initiative by the European Fire Prevention & Rural Preservation Organization (EFPRP) designed to aid Greece in recovering from wildfires and improve preparedness for future ones.

Here's a breakdown of the project's key aspects:

Mission:

  • Donate firefighting equipment to the Hellenic Fire Corps (smoke masks, radios, thermal imaging, etc.)
  • Equip the EFPRP Incident First Responder (IFR) Taskforce with basic emergency response gear.
  • Fund restoration projects in wildfire-affected areas (Attica and Peloponnese) including:
    • Rebuilding burnt structures.
    • Repairing public infrastructure (road signs, animal shelters).
    • Replanting burned forests.

Background and Rationale:

  • Wildfires are a growing problem in Greece, with significant damage in 2024 (Attica) and historically (worst year - 2007).
  • Project Olympus aims to improve response and recovery efforts for future wildfires.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Primary Goal: Strengthen first response capabilities, improve response times, and begin restoration efforts.
  • Specific Objectives:
    • Emergency Services: Provide new equipment to the Hellenic Fire Corps.
    • First Response: Equip the EFPRP IFR Taskforce.
    • Restoration: Restore damaged buildings and replant burnt forests.

Target Audience:

  • Hellenic Fire Corps: Receive updated firefighting equipment for improved safety and effectiveness.
  • EFPRP IFR Taskforce: Get essential first responder gear for faster and safer emergency response.
  • Residents and Communities: Benefit from restored infrastructure and environmental recovery.
  • Environment and Ecosystems: Restore damaged ecosystems and promote biodiversity.

Activities and Timeline:

  • Phase 1 (Months 1-3): Planning and Procurement (equipment suppliers, restoration sites, fundraising)
  • Phase 2 (Months 4-9): Equipment Distribution and Restoration (delivering equipment, restoration work, forest restoration)
  • Phase 3 (Months 10-12): Evaluation and Reporting (equipment impact, restoration progress, reports for stakeholders)

Expected Outcomes:

  • Short-Term: Improved firefighting capabilities, enhanced first responder readiness, local community benefits, environmental recovery (reforestation begins).
  • Long-Term: Strengthened firefighting infrastructure, sustained community recovery, improved environmental stability (continued forest restoration).

Budget: €125,000.00 (Funding Sources: Donations, Memberships, State Subventions)

Project Team:

  • Alexios Elizalde Xirokosta (Project Manager)
  • Rémi Baysang (Project Coordinator)
  • Romain Brouat (Project Outreach Strategy)

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Track response time, effectiveness of equipment/restoration, hectares of forest replanted.
  • Use pre- and post-distribution surveys with responders, quarterly progress reports, and post-project reviews for assessment.

Sustainability:

The project seeks continued funding through individual donations, local partnerships, and developing a peer mentorship program for long-term impact.
